Bamboo Island

Bamboo Island is situated in Lake Balaton, 100 meters from the Siófok shoreline, serving as the launch point for one of Hungary's most frequented wakeboard courses. Since 2001, a bamboo-framed shade structure, designed and constructed by our team, has been erected annually. The island superstructure features a bamboo framework with elements secured using detachable wedge connections. Bowden cables ensure stability and flexibility between these elements. The design incorporates graphic elements, including posters and signage.

The metal pier comprises bamboo handrails and mooring ropes affixed to 1.30m spaced metal uprights. Advertising banners and lighting fixtures are mounted on the railing posts. A 20 cm high platform, serving as a stage, is centrally located on the pier. This stage facilitates the display of apparel and equipment and functions as a performance space during events. Behind the O'Neill display wall on the platform, a 2 sq m lockable metal storage room houses technical equipment and other supplies. This room is equipped with shelving for organized storage. Flanking the storage room are two changing cubicles, each enclosed by a curtain sliding on a rail. When not in use, the curtains retract, maximizing stage space. The storage room wall features two mirrors and fold-down seats.

The bar consists of a 12m perimeter circular counter with seating, complemented by a 4m long bar counter. Both counters have a height of 1.20m. Metal slat junctions secure the supporting bamboo poles to the decking and the counter. A thin bamboo grid between the posts allows for wind permeability. The bar's equipment and technical specifications are currently under review. Countertops and the bar itself are crafted from Scots pine planks. A 20 cm high bamboo footrest extends along the length of the bar. 15 fixed bar stools, constructed with similar materials, are attached to the counter.

Bamboo columns, originating from the island's structural nodes, and a tensioned wire system support the aluminum and bamboo tube framework upon which a 75 sq m canvas canopy is stretched. The shade canopy is composed of three independent elements, each retractable via a pulley system. In strong winds, the canopy is retracted by the island staff. The shade canopy has varying heights of 3m and 2.70m. Supporting poles, measuring 3.5m and 6m in height, also accommodate lighting fixtures and waste receptacles.
